Long-Term Research Cooperation: Impact of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction on Community Socio-economic Conditions Post-Tsunami in Meuraxa Sub-district

This joint research study between Nagoya University Japan and TDMRC UnSyiah was performed to examine socioeconomic change in the community after the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. The objective of the research was to understand the outcomes and the problems faced in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction in Meuraxa Sub-district, Banda Aceh, viewed from the perspective of the community. The research used the time series method, in which the impact was evaluated yearly. It has been planned that this cooperative research study will be carried out until 2010. Research has been conducted on seven villages in Meuraxa Sub-district, Banda Aceh, yielding a total of 127 samples.

The cooperation between Nagoya University and TDMRC UnSyiah is not only limited to field research, but also includes joint utilization of the survey outcome data for scientific purposes. Currently 85% of the research has been completed for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, and it will continue in June 2010.

The research findings have been published in the scientific journal of Nagoya University. In general, the research shows that the community has gradually felt positive impacts from the rehabilitation and reconstruction process in regards to livelihood recovery. In addition, the community feedback indicated that the most dominant change that has occurred is in the construction of buildings funded by NGOs and other donors, BRR, and the local government.
